BEING VEGETARIAN IN PARIS

I’ve decided to write about being vegetarian in Paris not because the matter concerns me, as I am a carnivorous beast, but because several requests were sent to me and because being vegetarian in Paris is not always a breeze.
The flesh loving (excuse the pun) French known for their refined cuisine have made their name on specialties such as boeuf bourguignon, le foie gras, les terrines and les andouillettes!

On one hand Parisians enjoy meat, on the other they truly tend to their health and figure, and so you will notice that people may order a steak tartar with mounds of green salad, or liver with veggies on the side.

Being vegetarian and eating healthy in Paris is also a matter of contradictions.
On one hand you will find a large number of « Bio » stores, (health food stores) scattered around town, as well as fabulous bio products at practically every super market you go to. On the other hand finding vegetarian or vegan restaurants in the city is no small feat.

So here is a small compilation of addresses and brands you might enjoy, just in case tripes, hearts and kidneys don’t whet your appetite!

Good vegetarian chinese restaurant on Rue Chemin Vert in Republique, near corner with Rue St Maur (sorry forgot name - get metro to Rue St Maur). The vietnamese-style salads are good. Prices are cheap and the waitress speaks English. They also have an English menu. Thanks for your useful postings on hammams, shopping etc. Know any good sites for visitors to Amsterdam?

Thanks for the info! What a nice treat to find that upon waking. I am not a specialist on Amsterdam, I am ashamed to say that I've never been.
I only know the obvious clichés, like the Rembrandt museum, biking, and stuff I probably shouldn't talk about here...
Good luck and thanks again!

Ah, if only I could get someone else to pay for a meal at Arpege! I've happily ponied up the dollahs for Charlie Trotter's and Alinea, but Arpege is truly beyond my budget.

Thanks so much for posting this! I found a link to your site on the Thorn Tree Forum, and this is the first post I saw. How coincidental that I just posted a question about eating vegetarian in France, as my wife (a veg of 12 years) and I (a die hard carnivore) will be traveling to Paris and Normandy in July of this year. Thanks for this comprehensive list. I am sure it will come in handy!
